We live in a structured environment: structured buildings, structured cities, structured lives.

Doing more with less

This is almost the definition of an engineer, but in our modern world the principle is more important than ever. Minimizing resource use is good for both Planet Earth and for the project budget.

At Structured Environment we work mainly as structural engineers. We look for the best order in our constructed world, and the best use of structural materials, so that clients can more successfully realize their aims.

We have designed the structures for all of the projects shown in these pages. We have imposed a physical order using steel, glass, timber, concrete, aluminium, soil, masonry, and other materials.

The results have come about often through a collaboration of engineer and architect, from a physical organization intersecting with a spatial organization.

We aim to engineer safely, economically, efficiently, and beautifully. We seek a total which is more than the sum of its parts, and a result that brings delight at a level deeper than the merely practical.

Adding value

Doing more with less adds value, but we also strive to bring creative ideas and solutions to every design so that our clients can achieve the maximum potential from each project. We make sure to always engage properly with the architect, building services designer, and other team members to achieve a properly integrated building.

Skill and experience

We have been designing structures for 30 years in the UK and abroad. The experience and training of our staff brings certainty and reassurance to this most fundamental part of any construction project.

Formed in 1998 by Alan Burden, SE now acts as structural engineer for projects ranging in scale from furniture to buildings, electronic device cases to bridges. Most of our work is in the UK and Japan, but we are able to respond to needs in most countries. The practice has staff fully qualified in the UK, Japan and all of the European Union.
